Newborn dumped in rubbish bin but is saved after passersby hear her cries

A newborn baby has been found crying in a rubbish bin by passersby who heard the tiny infant crying.

CCTV footage appears to show a mother abandoning her young daughter in a box full of rubbish, before casually strolling away.

Luckily people nearby heard the tiny infant crying and found her laying amongst fruit peelings and other food waste.

Police officer Liu Jia, who was in the area and saw the gathered crowd went over to help, in the city of Leshan in south west China.

He confirmed the little girl was unharmed.

She was kept at the police station and checked for injuries, while other officers contacted the child’s family.

The baby's mum, Mrs Yao, was tracked down and her family say she has a mental illness and was struggling to cope with the child.

The infant was returned to the Mrs Yao’s family, who have agreed not to let the parent care for the girl on her own.

The family thanked the officers for finding the infant but did not reveal whether the mum had been receiving treatment for her condition.
