Newborn boy found abandoned on top of trash can in Chicago alley

CHICAGO _ A newborn baby was found in critical condition on top of a trash can Tuesday afternoon in the Hermosa neighborhood on Chicago's Northwest Side, authorities said.

Around 4:15 p.m., a passerby discovered the boy inside an alley in the 1700 block of North Keystone Avenue, according to Chicago Fire Department Deputy District Chief Curtis Hudson.

Chicago police said the newborn baby had been on top of a garbage can and was in critical condition.

The passerby brought the baby over to a nearby Chicago Fire Department station, 1747 N. Pulaski Road, where he was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, Hudson said. The baby's condition was later stabilized, and he was transferred to Lurie Children's Hospital Wednesday morning, a police spokeswoman said. Area North detectives were investigating.

The Illinois Safe Haven Law, enacted in 2001, allows parents to drop off unharmed babies less than 30 days old at designated locations with no questions asked. Locations include hospitals, police stations, fire stations, sheriff's offices and emergency medical care facilities.
