Newborn baby whose mum died from coronavirus smiles as he finally returns home

A baby whose mother died from coronavirus days after he was born has finally returned home.

Fozia Hanif had just celebrated her 29th birthday when her ventilator was turned off in Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

She died before even getting a chance to see her baby.

But now Fozia's cousin Zilley Khan has shared "our great news" that "healthy and happy" baby Ayaan is now home.

Fozia Hanif had just celebrated her 29th birthday when her ventilator was turned off in Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (ITV)

Sharing a gorgeous picture of Ayaan smiling in a baby seat she wrote: "Just wanted to share our great news with u all.

"My cousin who died a month ago aged 29 with covid, who delivered her baby at 31 weeks.

"Well baby Ayaan is home today covid free, healthy & happy baby MahShaAllah."

Zilley added: "Indeed this news has made us forget our sadness ans through baby Ayaan we will remember our beautiful cousin Fozia xx."

Baby Ayaan has now left Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (SWNS)

A nurse who worked in ICU at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham replied: " That is wonderful news as a nurse who works in ICU at Heartlands I will share this news with them if that is okay as we were all rooting for him. We were also all devastated when your cousin died - out of every storm there is a beautiful rainbow.

"I will personally tell Jo who was the nurse that cared for your cousin the day she lost her life - we talk about her often - her memory will live on in us for ever - a little piece of her will be with us always."

Zilley replied:"Thank you so much Antonia and pls do say my special thanks to Jo and team for looking after my little sister whom memories will stay with us all, but we will see her through Ayaan."

After losing a child during her first pregnancy last year, Fozia had been going to hospital for regular maternity check ups during her second.

During one visit it was discovered she had a slight fever and later tested positive for Covid -19.

Fozia’s husband, Wajid Ali, said: “They said we’re going to keep her here to find out and we’re going to do a Covid test and they kept her for 2 days.

"The test came back positive and the next day they said it was mild and you can go home.”

“After 4 days she had difficulty breathing and we called the ambulance."

Her sister Sophia Hanif continued: “When the ambulance came they did checks … and everything was alright in terms of her blood pressure and sugar levels, but they still had to take her in to hospital for her baby and the next 2 days, I think it was the second day she was in hospital she gave birth.”

Fozia’s baby, Ayaan Hanif Ali, was born at 31 weeks on 2nd April 2020 by Caesarean section.

Fozia, who worked for probation services in Birmingham Magistrate's Court, was taken to a recovery ward after the birth, but her condition deteriorated and she was relocated to an ICU ward where she was put onto a ventilator.

She was not able to receive visitors whilst on the ward and her family were only able to have a few phone calls with her whilst she was in the recovery ward.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family here.
