Newborn baby pictured clinging on to mother's failed contraceptive coil

A newborn baby has been pictured grasping his mother's failed contraceptive coil in Vietnam.

The images show the baby boy clinging on to the intrauterine device (IUD) at Hai Phong International Hospital.

The coil reportedly came out at the same time as the boy was born, and he grasped it firmly as the photo was taken, a doctor assisting with the birth said.

Obstetrician Tran Viet Phuong told local media: "After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention."

Mr Phuong added that the IUD, which the mother had implanted around two years ago, may have become dislodged from its original position, which would have made it ineffective.

Sharing the photos online, the hospital joked: "The baby is very brave, breaking his family planning method to join the 'misery' with humanity."

The baby was reportedly born healthy, weighing 7lbs. Local media reported that the boy was his mother's third child.

IUDs are more than 99 per cent effective at preventing pregnancies when inserted correctly, according to the NHS.
