Two people have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a 12-day-old baby was fatally attacked by a dog.

South Yorkshire Police said the newborn suffered "serious injuries" after being bitten by a dog at an address in Welfare Road, Doncaster, on Sunday afternoon.

A 35-year-old man and 27-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

The pair have been bailed pending further enquiries and the dog has been removed from the address.

Flowers have been left at the gate of the property in Welfare Road.

A local told the Sun Online that they drove by as police were removing a dog from the address.

“It was a big fluffy golden thing. It didn’t look like a dangerous breed," said Sally Hooley. “But police were struggling to get it into the dog van."

A police liaison officer at the neighbouring property told the Mirror that the family is too upset to speak

"Police were called to an address on Welfare Road in Woodlands, Doncaster at around 3.30pm on Sunday following reports that a dog had attacked a child," a police spokesman said.

"On arrival at the property, emergency services discovered a 12-day-old baby boy had been bitten by a dog and suffered serious injuries.

"The child was taken to hospital, but sadly died a short time later."
