Newborn baby boy dies just day after mum's tragic death at Cork University Maternity Hospital

A newborn baby boy who was found underneath his dead mother on the floor of an Irish hospital has also died.

The South/Southwest Hospital Group confirmed the tot passed away on Tuesday evening, RTE reports.

A statement issued by Cork University Maternity hospital said: "As with all unexplained deaths a full medical investigation was immediately initiated. This investigation is currently under way at CUMH.

"CUMH wishes to express its deepest sympathy with the family of the mother and her baby. The priority now for the hospital is the well-being of their family."

Sources said it is believed the woman suffered “an episode” and fell unconscious in her single room at Cork University Hospital.

Staff found her lying on the floor at 8am on Monday morning.

An insider said: “The theory at the moment is she became unwell and fell from her bed on to the floor.

“It is a tragic freak accident. She was checked by staff at 7am and was discovered dead an hour later – there will have to be a post-mortem to determine what exactly happened."

A post-mortem is due to take place on the body of the mother today.

Health watchdog HIQA said it is monitoring the situation and will examine the investigation.

A spokesman for the South/South West Hospital Group said: “We wish to confirm an investigation is under way following a tragic occurrence at Cork University Maternity Hospital.

“Our priority is supporting the patient’s family and therefore we will not be commenting on the individual case at this time.”

Cork University Hospital and its Maternity hospital is one of the biggest in the country.

Its website said it offers single, double and four-bed rooms.

It added: “CUMH opened in March 2007 and involved the amalgamation of maternity services from Erinville Hospital, St Finbarr’s Maternity Hospital, Bon Secours Maternity Unit and gynaecology services from Cork University Hospital."
