Newark pub teams up with South African chef to bring 'unique' grill to town

A pub in a Nottinghamshire town has partnered with an international chef to start a "unique" new food venture. The South African grill will soon open in Newark and is something 'the town needs' to stand out from the crowd, its landlord says.

David Potter, who runs The Rutland Arms, says he has joined forces with Layton Barnes, a private chef who hails from South Africa and is famed for his artistic approach to sushi dishes. Chef Barnes has more than 2,000 followers on Instagram and 1,600 on Facebook. The new offering will be called 'Braai'.

A braai is South Africa's 'answer' to a barbeque, however the meat must be cooked using a wood or charcoal-fired grill and not on a gas grill. Mr Potter told Nottinghamshire Live he was inspired to attempt the new venture having visited the Hush Courtyard pop-up street food offering which came to the town in June last year.

It was after this he managed to team up with Chef Barnes. He said: "We are really excited. It will be a separate business. I cannot stress enough how good Chef Barnes is.

"We wanted to do something like [Hush] in Newark because it is different and unique. So we got together and got into a partnership."

The 'Braai' will be opening on May 3 and will offer dine in and takeaway food. An Instagram page has been set up ready for the opening.

"It is something I think that Newark needs," Mr Potter added. "We are a very good daytime town but everything seems to be similar, so we are trying to do things in a different way."
