Newark MP Robert Jenrick defends 40-mile trip to parents' house

Newark MP and Cabinet Minister Robert Jenrick has said the 40-mile trip he made to his parents' house was 'essential' travel.

The housing, communities and local government secretary was spotted making the trip to Shropshire at the weekend, reported The Guardian.

The MP's father and mother, 79 and 69, live in a detached house in a village - more than an hour’s drive from his home in Herefordshire, from where he has been doing TV interviews.

Mr Jenrick, who has spoken at the Government's daily coronavirus briefing urging people to remain home even if tempted to see loved ones, has defended his trip.

Taking to Twitter the MP offered 'clarity' on his visit.

He said: "For clarity - my parents asked me to deliver some essentials - including medicines.

"They are both self-isolating due to age and my father's medical condition and I respected social distancing rules."

The Guardian also reported Mr Jenrick had travelled between London and his home in Herefordshire.
