Newark man steals alcohol from Aldi and uses trolley to assault staff

A man who stole alcohol from an Aldi supermarket has been jailed after he used a trolley to assault a member of staff who saw him leaving the store without paying.

Connor Kelsall, 22, of Albert Street, in Newark, has been sentenced to ten weeks in prison.

The 22-year-old was arrested after police were called to the supermarket in Northgate at around 6.15pm on Thursday, April 2

After a staff member saw Kelsall leaving without paying for a bottle of alcohol, Kelsall shoved the worker with a supermarket trolley.

Kelsall also threatened the member of staff.

He was charged and appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court the following day (Friday, April 3).

Kelsall pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four weeks for shop theft and six weeks for assault.

He will serve a total of 10 weeks as a result.

Newark neighbourhood Inspector Heather Sutton said: "Our supermarket workers are playing a key role as they ensure we are able to get food and vital supplies during this difficult time. They are on the frontline and should be treated with the utmost respect.

“We are seeing that the majority of people are being respectful and complying with the regulations around only carrying out essential trips and social distancing.

"But if anyone threatens a shop worker as they carry out their vital duties, we will take this incredibly seriously and this behaviour will not be tolerated."
