New zero waste shop Bloop opens in south Bristol

Bristol has welcomed an impressive six zero waste shops this year, with the latest opening its doors in south Bristol earlier this month.

Bloop in Totterdown joins Zero Green in Southville, Smaller Footprints in Clifton, Preserve on Gloucester Road and Redfield and Scoop Wholefoods on Whiteladies Road.

Headed up by husband and wife Jayne Rutland and Karl Kadler - and their Jack Russell Graham, who is the 'shop manager' - Bloop sells a range of household and cleaning products which are all plastic free.

"We've had the idea of opening our own zero waste shop for a while and after we moved to Bristol from Brixton in June the timing felt right," said former hairdresser Jayne, aged 44.

"We have always loved Bristol as there's such a strong cultural offering here and it's a really nice size. Since opening we've found all customers to be so supportive and welcoming.

"We've been really taken aback by the number of people who say they are already refilling, which has been really refreshing to hear.

"We've also loved hearing people's suggestions for the shop."

Products on sale at the store include washing up liquid, compostable bin bags, soap on a rope, dishwasher tablets, scrubbing brushes, toothpaste and more.

Customers are encouraged to bring their own containers in with them but there are spares for people who don't.

Jayne added she hopes to inspire nearby residents to shop ethically and plans to host workshops in the future where people can learn more about leading zero-waste lifestlyes.

The shop's interior, including the wooden benches and counter, was designed by Karl, a sound designer when he's not helping out at the shop, with the help of his dad.

Bloop is located at 123 Oxford Street, BS3 4RL, where Baked bakery used to be before closing in August last year.
