Warren Gatland has admitted the bronze match was "a game too far" for Wales.
Wales finished fourth after losing to New Zealand in Gatland's final game as head coach.
And though he praised his side's effort, the 56-year-old admitted that for some of his squad this was one game too many.
"Congratulations to the All Blacks, they were outstanding tonight," Gatland told the world feed after the game. "But our boys never gave up and kept trying to play some good rugby in the second half.
"I'm pleased with that, but disappointed.
"It was probably a game too far for us really with a five-day turnaround with South Africa last week and the All Blacks tonight."
Gatland departs Wales after leading them to two Rugby World Cup semi-finals during his 12 years in charge.
He will return home to his native New Zealand to coach the Chiefs in Hamilton, where he has signed a four-year deal which includes time away from the side to take charge of the British and Irish Lions in South Africa in 2021.
First, Gatland will get the chance to say farewell as he coaches the Barbarians against Wales (to be helmed by incoming coach Wayne Pivac) at the Millennium Stadium on November 30.
"I’ve loved my time in Wales," Gatland said of his tenure in charge.
"The people have been amazing and incredibly welcoming.
"That era is over now, and I’m excited about the next challenge, going back to New Zealand and being involved with the Chiefs.”
