New Zealand volcano eruption news LIVE: Two Britons among 31 in hospital with five dead and eight still missing

Five people have died, eight people are missing and 31 remain in hospital following an eruption on a volcanic island in New Zealand.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said 47 people - including New Zealanders and tourists from Australia, the US, the UK, China and Malaysia - were on White Island on Monday when it erupted with a large plume of ash and steam.

Two British women are among those who are being treated in hospital after the incident. Their conditions have not been confirmed.

A missing persons list which aims to reunite concerned family members with their loved ones shows up to five people with a UK birthplace still unaccounted for.
