White Island volcano eruption claims another victim

A person injured in the Whakaari/White Island volcano eruption has died in hospital, taking the official death toll to 17, New Zealand police say.

Deputy Commissioner John Tims confirmed the death, in an Auckland hospital, in a statement on Monday morning.

Police have not revealed the victim's identity or nationality.

Sixteen of the 17 victims counted in the official death toll died in New Zealand, while one died at Sydney's Concord Hospital.

Two people, Australian Winona Langford, 17, and New Zealand citizen Hayden Marshall-Inman, 40, remain missing after the disaster two weeks ago and they are presumed dead.

Authorities believe both Ms Langford and Mr Marshall-Inman's bodies are in the waters around the island and may have drifted up to 70 kilometres away.

Recovery teams were tasked with locating the bodies, but police last week conceded they may never be found.

"There is no guarantee their bodies will be located and police recognise the immense pain this must cause their families," Commissioner Tims said on Wednesday.

"It's important to be clear — we haven't given up.

"Police resources including the Eagle helicopter and Deodar vessel will remain in Whakatane for several days."

Most of those killed or injured in the eruption were part of organised day trips from the Ovation of the Seas cruise ship, which docked in Sydney last week.

There were 47 people on the island when the volcano erupted. More than half were Australian citizens or permanent residents.
