New Zealand records another 13 coronavirus cases

New Zealand has recorded 13 new cases of coronavirus in the community.

That means 30 cases acquired in New Zealand have now been recorded.

Two of the new cases are in the town of Tokoroa, in the centre of New Zealand's North Island.

All but one of the new cases have already been linked to the Auckland COVID-19 cluster which was discovered earlier this week.

The announcement from New Zealand's Health Minister and Director-General of Health came after Americold's managing director Richard Winnall confirmed two more workers had tested positive at the company's cold storage facility in the Auckland suburb of Mount Wellington.

Six workers at the Americold facility have now tested positive to the virus.

One of those workers, a man in his 50s, is part of the family of four who tested positive to the virus earlier this week, ending New Zealand's run of more than 100 days without community transmission.

Mr Winnall said authorities had not yet conducted swab tests at the Mount Wellington warehouse, but said he expected it would happen today.

Health authorities have said they will swab the site to rule out freight as a possible source of the outbreak.

Officials are still trying to uncover the source of the new outbreak.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said the two new cases in Tokoroa were part of a household that had contact with two people from Auckland, who had also visited a rest home in Morrinsville, outside Hamilton.

"The visit occurred before they were aware that they were infectious or had exposure," Dr Bloomfield said.

"Others in that household have tested negative, and staff at the DHB [district health board] remain in very close contact with the family and are providing support to the family who are all currently self-isolating, [and] have been very helpful and cooperative."

A testing station has been opened in Tokoroa.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters yesterday told the ABC that he believed it came from a quarantine breach.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will today announce whether the current stage 3 lockdown in Auckland will be eased or extended.

Ms Ardern put Auckland, home to about 1.7 million people, into lockdown for three days earlier this week.

She also reinstated social distancing measures across the country.
