New Zealand now has more than 100 active COVID-19 cases, with five new infections recorded

There are 101 active coronavirus cases in New Zealand, with another five infections confirmed on Thursday.

All five cases are related to the community outbreak in Auckland, taking the total number from that cluster to 80, while one case that was considered part of the Auckland cluster has been reclassified as a mystery case.

Of the 101 active cases, just two have no known link to a previous infection.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said there were six New Zealanders in hospital, one of them in intensive care.

Dr Bloomfield said anyone who had been in St Lukes Mall in Auckland on Wednesday, August 12 should be on the lookout for symptoms.

Progress has been made on one of the mystery cases, a maintenance worker at the Rydges Hotel in Auckland.

Public health officials have identified a lift at the hotel which they believe could be where the worker contracted the virus.

The worker used the lift shortly after a guest who later tested positive.

"This is now a new and strong line of investigation," Dr Bloomfield said.

"We have seen before, and we know that, the virus can be passed on contaminated surfaces."

Thursday's numbers are lower than those recorded earlier in the week, with 13 each on Tuesday and Sunday, and 14 last Thursday.

While pleased with the decrease, Health Minister Chris Hipkins said: "The next few days could be critical in breaking the back of this resurgence."

"This is not the time we can afford to relax," he said.

"We do need to continue to maintain our focus and all play our part."
