New Zealand national TV to show Coronation Street instead of Wales match because they didn't get rights for unglamorous third-place game

Like Wales, New Zealand is currently licking its wounds after devastating semi final loss.

As the coaches from both teams seek to pick up their squads ahead of Friday's bronze medal match, there is some good news for Kiwis... as long as they are soap fans.

This is because New Zealand's national TV station TVNZ will not be showing the game and will instead be broadcasting Coronation Street.

It may seem odd that a rugby-obsessed country would ditch the national sport for the latest happenings in Weatherfield.

This is not a sign of grief from the TV executives but instead the way broadcast rights for the tournament have worked out.

TVNZ confirmed to the New Zealnd Herald today that it will not be covering Friday's bronze medal match and will air Coronation Street instead, saying "it's not our choice".

"TVNZ was given rights to cover 12 matches and unfortunately the bronze game wasn't one," a TVNZ spokeswoman said.

The TVNZ spokeswoman said on demand service Spark Sport, who have the main rights for the tournament in New Zealand, would be streaming the match live online.

The Herald reports All Blacks fans being shocked by the situation, with one saying: "[It's] arguably a more important game than any of the pool stages after the defeat in Yokohama."

The match will be a final farewell for All Blacks coach Steve Hansen and captain Kieran Read.

In Wales, luckily you won't need to stream the game. Coverage will be broadcast on ITV from 8.30am on Friday, November 1.
