New Zealand aim to translate World Cup experience into success in Bangladesh Tests

NEW DELHI: New Zealand are gearing up for their ICC World Test Championship campaign in Bangladesh, drawing inspiration from their recent stint at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India. Despite a semifinal exit in the 50-over tournament, the Black Caps are eager to refocus on Test cricket as they commence a two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting in Sylhet on Tuesday.

The upcoming series marks New Zealand's initiation into the current World Test Championship cycle, and key batter Daryl Mitchell is emphasising a strong start. The Kiwis aim to qualify for the final, having secured victory in the inaugural final in 2021.

Mitchell acknowledges the challenges presented by Bangladesh, particularly adapting to unfamiliar conditions. With an eye on the long-term goal of the World Test Championship final in 2025, Mitchell emphasises the importance of setting small goals and tackling each match as it comes.

"For us, it is about making small goals. Trying to tick off games as we go. First, we have to take on Bangladesh. It is always a tough challenge in Bangladesh," stated Mitchell.

The 32-year-old batsman, a key contributor to New Zealand's World Cup campaign with 552 runs and two centuries, values the recognition of being included in the official ICC Team of the Tournament. Despite the quick transition from white-ball cricket to Tests, Mitchell is eager to stay present and contribute to the Test team's success.

Reflecting on the spin-friendly pitches in the World Cup, Mitchell believes the experience will benefit the team in Bangladesh. "They have been practising on slower and turning surfaces, so that helps us in this Test series," he explained.

New Zealand's squad, led by Tim Southee, includes key players such as Tom Latham, Kane Williamson, and Kyle Jamieson. The team aims to build on their World Cup experience and make a mark in the World Test Championship, starting with the series against Bangladesh.

New Zealand Squad: Tim Southee (c), Tom Blundell (wk), Devon Conway, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will Young.
