New Yorkers advised to wear masks and 'use physical barriers like walls' during sex: 'Make it a little kinky'

New York City has updated its official guidance on having sex during the coronavirus outbreak.

Previously the city’s health officials made headlines for telling residents that “you are your safest sex partner”.

Now, in the latest update, the guidance has been extended to offer more tips for couples who have been separated by the pandemic.

“Masturbate together,” the guidance reads before suggesting “video dates, sexting, subscription-based fan platforms, sexy ‘Zoom parties’ or chat rooms may be options for you”.

For couples who live together and can have sex, the guidance suggests wearing a face mask or covering, given that Covid-19 can be transmitted via sexual contact.

“Wear a face covering or mask,” the guidance states. “Maybe it’s your thing, maybe it’s not, but during Covid19 wearing a face covering that covers your nose and mouth is a good way to add a layer of [extra] protection during sex.

“Heavy breathing and panting can spread the virus further, and if you or your partner have Covid-19 and don’t know it, a mask can help stop that spread.”

The guidance also suggests using “physical barriers” to elevate safety.

“Make it a little kinky,” the guidance reads. “Be creative with sexual positions and physical barriers, like walls, that allow sexual contact while preventing close face to face contact.”

Other suggestions include masturbating together, using condoms, and remembering that, like the guidance says, you are your safest sex partner.

Earlier this month, new laws were implemented in England that made it illegal for couples who live apart to have sex and stay the night.

However, from Saturday, people who live alone or with children in England will be able to form “support bubbles“ with another household, meaning that some couples will be able to spend the night together for the first time in nearly three months.
