NEW YORK Twice on Saturday, the Yankees advanced the defending world champion Red Sox's freefall in the standings despite sending another star to the injured list.
Edwin Encarnacion suffered a fractured wrist in the day-night doubleheader opener, a 9-2 win against Boston powered by two DJ LeMahieu home runs and seven strong innings by Domingo German.
In the nightcap, Gleyber Torres clubbed two homers and missed a third by mere feet.
But Torres' leadoff double off the right field wall keyed a two-run seventh inning, pushing the Yankees to a 6-4 win before 48,101 fans the largest crowd of the year at Yankee Stadium.
Mike Tauchman's two-run single with the bases loaded broke a 4-4 tie and the Yankees bullpen-ed their way to victory, beginning with Chad Green.
Zack Britton got out of his self-induced bases-loaded, eighth-inning jam and Aroldis Chapman the seventh pitcher used by manager Aaron Boone in the nightcap completed his 29th save.
Torre now has five two-homer games this year, the most by any Yankee before age 23 other than Joe DiMaggio, who did it five times in 1937.
And Torres' first four two-homer games this year had all come against the Baltimore Orioles.
