New York Times reporter Zachery Kouwe resigns

The New York Times journalist accused of plagiarism, Zachery Kouwe, has resigned from the paper rather than face disciplinary action, the paper has reported.

The reporter resigned at a meeting with executives at the Times, The New York Times Company and the Newspaper Guild of New York, sources told the Times.

A company spokeswoman did not confirm the resignation.

"The Times has dealt with this, as we said we would in our editors' note, consistent with our standards to protect the integrity of our journalism," Diane McNulty, a spokeswoman for the company, told the paper. "Beyond that, we don't comment on personnel issues."

Kouwe joined the Times in October 2008 after working as a mergers-and-acquisitions reporter for the New York Post. Prior to that he had worked at Dow Jones Newswires, which like the Wall Street Journal is owned by News Corporation.
