New York Times dialect quiz: Why everyone's talking about the test that decodes the British accent with unbelievable accuracy

Roll, bun or cob? Scone as in cone or scone as in gone? A New York Times quiz is asking just these sorts of questions, claiming it can tell where you're from based on your answers.

The quiz is based on the premise that wherever you're from in the UK and Ireland there will be words and phrases unique to your local area. In fact, the regional differences are so pronounced that areas just five miles apart will use completely different words for exactly the same thing.

The NYT says it can determine where in the UK or Ireland you grew up based on your answers to the 25-question quiz, which went viral over the weekend.

People were bowled over at just how accurate the results to the questionnaire were, with the quiz asking which colloquial words you use to describe emotions, objects, pastimes and the weather, and how you pronounce them.

Examples of the questions include "Which of these words would you use for a child's soft shoes worn for PE?", and "Which of these words would you use for a heavy rainfall".

After the quiz went live, Twitter was awash with people raving at how "scarily accurate" it was.

A poll conducted by The Language Gallery in 2017 found that the Northern Irish accent is the most popular in the UK.

The survey found that Welsh was the second most popular followed by Geordie. The least favourite was found to be Brummie, Scouse and Cockney.

In terms of perceptions, Brits thought that people with a Yorkshire and Welsh twang sound the happiest, while people in the Southeast sound the most intelligent and Glaswegians the angriest.
