New York explosion - live updates: Failed bombing was 'attempted terror attack', says Mayor Bill de Blasio

Police in New York are investigating reports of an explosion on a subway platform in Midtown Manhattan.

The city's police force tweeted that the "explosion" was of "unknown origin" and was located near the Port Authority bus terminal on 42nd street and 8th avenue.

Police later said a suspect was in custody with non-life threatening injuries, but reports by US media of a possible "pipe bomb" had not been corroborated by city officials.

The A, C and E subway lines have been evacuated, the NYPD added, and the Port Authority Bus Terminal has been closed.

Donald Trump has been kept informed about the incident, the White House has said, although the President is yet to tweet or publicly comment on it.
