New York native among 3 dead in Gilroy mass shooting

NEW YORK _ An upstate New York resident who was enjoying the Gilroy Garlic Festival with his girlfriend was one of the three people killed Sunday afternoon when a mass shooter opened fire.

Trevor Irby, 25, was gunned down in the random violence in Northern California while girlfriend Sarah Warner was unharmed, the couple's alma mater Keuka College confirmed in a statement.

A family member also confirmed Irby's death but declined to comment further without first speaking to his mother, Tamara Williams.

"My nephew was one of the victims of the Gilroy Festival in California. Please pray for our family. RIP Trevor," aunt Dionna Williams wrote in the caption to a Facebook post that included a picture of Irby in his graduation gear, standing with his grandfather.

Keuka College President Amy Storey said Irby was a biology major who graduated in 2017.

She confirmed his death in a message of "profound sadness" and said "our hearts go out to Trevor's family and loved ones."

"We are shocked that this latest episode of senseless gun violence resulted in the loss of one of our recent graduates, graduates in whom we place so much hope because of their potential to create a brighter tomorrow," she wrote.

"We also send sincere condolences to college alumna Sarah Warner, who was with Trevor at the California garlic festival where the shooting took place. We were relieved to learn that Sarah was not physically injured in the shooting," Storey said.

The private college located about 50 miles southeast of Rochester, N.Y., said it plans to hold a vigil in Irby's honor when the time is "appropriate."

"What is wrong with this world?" close family friend Tabitha Wilson wrote in a Facebook post.

She said Irby's mother was traveling to retrieve her son's body after the horrific rampage.

"(It's) something a mother never wants to imagine having to do. He was like a brother to me growing up thanks to our parents being so close and I'll never forget that. I got to know the person he once was and the person that he became," she wrote.

"He had so much going for himself and extremely smart. We all love you Trevor! Keep that Romulus spirit alive up there like you loved down with us. This is just (too) unreal," she said.

Another friend praised Irby for his kindness and "goofy" sense of humor and called him "one of the most intelligent people I know."

"You always lived life to the fullest," pal Zarrien Solan wrote on Facebook. "Thanks for being an amazing friend."

The other two victims who died in the carnage were a 6-year-old boy attending the festival with his family and a 13-year-old girl, authorities said Monday.

The 19-year-old gunman purchased his "AK-47-type" assault rifle in Nevada earlier this month and was shot and killed by police at the scene, police said.
