New York Liverpool FC bars play charity game to raise cash for Sean Cox Foundation

Staff and patrons from New York Liverpool FC bar Carragher's are taking on colleagues from a rival Reds bar in a fundraiser for injured fan Sean Cox .

The West 39th Street pub is going head to head with the Irish American - both bars are based in Manhattan and owned by Jamie Carragher’s 45-year-old business partner Brian McClaughlin.

Sean Cox was attacked close to Anfield before the Reds’  Champions League  semi-final first leg against Roma on April 24 last year.

He underwent major surgery after the assault after suffering a bleed on the brain and was placed into an induced coma by medics.

Irish dad-of-three Sean, from Dunboyne, County Meath, was this month pictured smiling along with Sir Kenny Dalglish during his first public outing since the attack.

He was guest of honour at an LFC Legends game in Dublin being held to raise money for his rehabilitation.

LFC also tweeted out a heartwarming photo of Sean, who gave a thumbs up for the camera.

Warren Smith, a bartender at Carragher's, said: “We were given a free hour to play on a pitch. So I thought it would a good opportunity to raise money for Sean Cox.”

And Riain Clifford, bartender at The Irish American, said: “Hopefully there’ll be some excellent charitable donations and we’ll have some fun. We hope to raise awareness of the (Sean Cox) foundation.”

Also at stake are bragging rights as to which New York bar is the real home of Liverpool Football Club in the Big Apple.

The Irish American boasts its basement bar-room, know as the Bootroom, which has shown every Liverpool match since 2008.

But, since opening in 2015, Carragher's Bar has established itself as the largest, and arguably most famous venue, to show the Reds in the US.

In recent years New York has become a hotbed of LFC activity, with the Merseyside club touring the city last summer and scheduled to return next pre-season.

A mural of Mo Salah last year appeared on a building overlooking Times Square and the Egyptian winger only this week attended a gala event in New York after he featured on TIME magazine's prestigious 100 Most Influential people list.

Warren said: “Because it's a such a great cause, we hope to raise as much as we can. Bragging rights will always be on the cards, but it’s all about Sean Cox on Sunday.”

More than $1,500 has been raised in just three days and all proceeds will go to the official Support Sean campaign.

The match kicks off at 12.30pm on Sunday, April 28 at Sofive in Brooklyn, New York.
