New York Jets stagger Los Angeles Rams for their first win

Disbelief. Shock. What else can you say when you hear the New York Jets won their first game of 2020, stunning the Los Angeles Rams, 23-20, at SoFi Stadium.

Did the Rams get caught looking ahead to next week’s game with the Seahawks? They got caught cold by the New York Jets, who surged to a 20-3 lead and held on for dear life.

The final dagger came when Frank Gore, all 37 years of him, caught a short pass and turned it into a first down at the two-minute warning.

That left the Rams without any timeouts and all the Jets had to do was have Sam Darnold take knees. Somehow, that happened without a turnover and the Jets are 1-13.

Remember, this is the same Jets team that lost to Seattle last week, 40-3, and had to head to the East Coast before returning to the West Coast,

The joy you heard probably was coming from Jacksonville, where the Jaguars realized they have company at 1-13 as teams battle for the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

And, if you were wondering where things stand between the Jets and Jags:

In situations where teams finished the previous season with identical records, the determination of draft position is decided by strength of schedule — the aggregate winning percentage of a team’s opponents. The team that played the schedule with the lowest winning percentage will be awarded the higher pick.

Jaguars opponents currently have a .554 strength of schedule compared to .593 for the Jets’ foes. That gives the Jags the edge for now.

After beating the Rams with former USC star Sam Darnold, who needs Trevor Lawrence?
