New York Jets player Kris Boyd is in a critical condition after being shot in Manhattan, according to media reports.

A spokesperson for the New York Police Department said emergency responders took a 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen to Bellevue Hospital in "critical but stable" condition.

The police spokesperson said there have been no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Jets said in a statement, "We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time."

The shooting took place near Seventh Avenue shortly after 2 am, according to police, who did not identify Boyd as the victim.

However, sources told The New York Post it was the 29-year-old NFL cornerback.

Boyd was shot in the abdomen outside an Asian restaurant after a dispute turned violent, law enforcement sources told the newspaper.

The American footballer is understood to have been with a group of friends when the dispute broke out, ending with two shots being fired. The Post reported that it was unclear whether Boyd was the intended target.

Officers were looking for a man they believe to be the shooter who fled the scene in a BMW X8 SUV.

A second vehicle, a high-end silver Mercedes-Benz Mayback, also reportedly fled the scene after the shooting, the sources said.

Boyd, who has made more than $8 million in his career, signed a $1.6 million contract to play for the Jets this season, according to the sports salary tracking site Spotrac.com.
