New York Helicopter crash: Pilot dead in skyscraper horror

At least one person has reportedly died after a helicopter crashed onto a building in New York, according to officials.

The Fire Department of New York confirmed crews are on the scene at 787 7th Ave in Manhattan, in between Times Square and Central Park.

A NYPD media account said the helicopter made a hard landing on the building's roof and that a fire has been put out.

The person killed in the incident was the aircraft's pilot.

They said: "There was a helicopter hard landing on the roof of 787 7th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Fire has been extinguished. Please continue to avoid the area."

Photos posted on Twitter show multiple emergency service vehicles, including many appliances, at the site.

The centre of Manhatten had been shrouded in clouds as bad weather set in around the city.

Other video posted online shows black smoke billowing out near the top of the building.

It is thought the crash landing at the AXA Equitable Center took place shortly before 2pm local time

Governor Andrew Cuomo told reporters that a fire began when the aircraft hit but is under control. He said it shook the building, but there were no reports of injuries in the tower.

It was not immediately known what type of helicopter was involved.

Videos posted by onlookers showed emergency vehicles in the street, but no obvious damage to the skyscraper.
