NEW YORK — New York Attorney General Letitia James has requested testimony from Donald Trump in her civil probe into possible fraud by the Trump Organization, the former president’s sprawling family business, according to a report published Thursday.
James, a Democrat who is challenging Gov. Kathy Hochul in New York’s gubernatorial race, is pursuing a deposition from the Republican former commander in chief early in 2021, The Washington Post reported, citing unnamed sources.
James’ office declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Trump, Liz Harrington, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Washington Post reported that the attorney general is said to have asked to receive Trump’s testimony on Jan. 7 at her office in New York.
James’ office has accused the Trump Organization of failing to sufficiently respond to subpoenas as part of the civil investigation. After a state Supreme Court order in September forcing the organization to comply with subpoenas, the office said in a statement, “Our work will continue undeterred because no one is above the law.”
James’ office is also pursuing a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization in tandem with the Manhattan district attorney.
In October, Trump sat for testimony in New York City as part of a lawsuit stemming from his Trump Tower security team’s crackdown on Mexican protesters in 2015.
