You might have thought that big Christmas shop would last for weeks but it's amazing how quickly supplies run low and we find ourselves having to top up on food and drink for New Year.
There were big queues for the supermarkets on New Year’s Eve , when many families tend to hit the shops to buy party food and fizz for the evening's celebrations or even just some household essentials such as milk and bread.
But for anyone who needs to stock up the food and drink cupboards as they plan to celebrate the first day of 2020 with families and friends, here's our handy guide to New Year opening times at shopping centres and supermarkets.
The following have announced their festive opening hours and they do vary - so here's what you need to know to avoid being caught out.
But, remember, when it comes to the major stores it is also worth double-checking before you make the trip as there can be local differences.
Shopping centres
intu Eldon Square and Metrocentre
Both shopping centres opened from 9am until 5pm on New Year's Eve, with Grey's Quarter restaurants in Eldon Square open later.
Both are closed on New Year's Day, save for the Grey's Quarter restaurants and, at Metrocentre, some leisure facilities.
Normal hours then resume from Thursday, January 2.
Supermarkets
Asda
Stores do vary but the company has confirmed that its larger stores will open on New Year’s Eve AND New Year’s Day, with reduced trading hours.
Stores opened from 7am until 7pm on New Year's Eve and from 10am until 5pm on New Year's Day.
Sometimes, individual hours may vary so it's always worth checking your local store. Check here .
Normal hours resume from Thursday, January 2: opening at 7am.
Sainsbury’s
Trading hours will be reduced for New Year's Day and the opening times listed are based on the company's larger stores.
So, again, it's best to double-check with local stores before making a trip. Find it using the store locator here .
For instance, on New Year's Day the Team Valley and Cramlington stores will open from 9am until 7pm while the Washington) will open at the same time but close at 5pm.
Tesco
The company's Tesco Express, Metro and Superstores will have varied opening hours so it is important to check local stores' own hours. To do so, click here .
But as examples we have picked out three main stores across the region.
The opening hours for Gateshead Trinity Square Extra for New Year's Day are from 9am-6pm
Here are the hours for Chester le Street Superstore in North Burns: New Year's Day - 10am-4pm.
Here are the hours for Tesco Hexham Extra : New Year's Day - 9am-6pm.
Morrisons
The store opened on New Year’s Eve from 7am to 6pm and is open on New Year’s Day from 9am-6pm. Smaller stores may be closed.

Waitrose
The Newcastle branch at Eldon Square is closed on New Year's Day and then will reopen from 7.30am on Wednesday, closing at 8.30pm.
The Little Waitrose branch in Jesmond is open 11am until 5pm on New Year's Day and from 7.30am until 8.30pm on Thursday, January 3.
Marks & Spencer
Most M&S stores - Gateshead's Team Valley is an exception - will be closed on New Year's Day.
On Thursday, January 2 the Newcastle store will be open from 8am-8pm and Metrocentre from 9am - 9pm.
The Team Valley store, however, will be open on New Year's Day from 10am-5pm. It will open again on Thursday from 8am to 8pm.
Aldi
The store has branches in and around Newcastle in the likes of Pelaw, Felling and Cowgate.
The stores will be closed on New Year’s Day. They will reopen on January 2 from 8am-10pm. Aldi does stress that the times apply to most of its stores but may vary from store to store. Check your local store here for more details.
Lidl
The store has branches in and around Newcastle in areas such as Wrekenton, Pelaw, Benwell and Walkergate.
They will be closed on New Year's Day. Then they will reopen on Thursday from 8am-10pm.
