New Year's Honours List: Former Ayr MSP lands an OBE

Former Ayr MSP, John Scott, has today spoken of his pride at landing an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

Mr Scott said he was “surprised” and “humbled” with the accolade recognising his political and public service.

The Scottish Conservative and Unionist politician served the Ayr constituency at Holyrood with distinction from 2000 to 2021 and continues to be a ‘weel kent’ figure in the region.

Delighted Mr Scott, 70, said: “I’m very surprised and humbled to be considered for this honour.

“Of course, I was delighted to receive it, but it’s not just for me, it also reflects the enormous dedication and contribution of my long serving staff who worked with me for over 20 years in my parliamentary office.”

John reflected on his long, distinguished political career and admitted: “I have no regrets. I could not have tried harder for my constituents and during my time in parliament, I have made many friendships that will be enduring.

“When I was first elected, I was humbled with the responsibility of trying to represent the constituency of more than 70,000 people.

“It’s an exceptionally important job, representing the people of this fantastic constituency. And this honour is also very humbling.”

Mr Scott, who battled pancreatic cancer in recent years, lost his Ayr seat in May last year by 170 votes to the SNP’s Siobhian Brown.

But to this day he remains busy with all his farming, charitable and family commitments.

He said: “My farm keeps me busy, as does my one or two charitable commitments.

“But I’m also seeing more of my children and grandchildren in the last six months since the election than I did in the last five years, so that’s a good thing too!”

Also honoured in the New Year’s Honours List were Prestwick’s Evelyn Jane Bowman JP, for Public Service, and Troon’s Reverend Archibald Murdoch Ford, for services to the community in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire.
