A pair of artisans decorate a small plum tree and willow branches with white and red mochi rice cakes at a studio in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. The trimmings are Hanamochi traditional New Year's decorations indigenous to the Hida region. The peak season for Hanamochi making is under way, with the studio beginning production in late November.
