New Year's Eve weather forecast: Revellers set for 'cool but clear' night as they mark start of 2020

The year 2020 will arrive with a cool but clear night as revellers around the UK celebrate New Year's Eve.

Forecasters predict that Britons will enter the new decade without raincoats or umbrellas as firework displays kick off across the country.

But Tuesday will still be a colder day than Monday and party-goers will need to wrap up warm as they head out to ring in 2020, the Met Office has said.

Meanwhile, Londoners will welcome the new year with a "fairly cloudy evening" as the mercury drops to around 3C, according to Met Office spokeswoman Nicky Maxey.

"The capital will see a fairly cloudy, grey day leading into a fairly cloudy evening but it will be dry and not too cold with temperatures staying above freezing," she said.

"This evening is looking at around 3-6C in the London area so a milder night for most of the city."

"It will be a good night if you are going out," she added.

Ms Maxey said the picture looks similar across most of the UK although there may be some fog and frost in the northeast of Scotland and drizzle over hills in the west of the UK.

"But generally it is not a night of rain or wind," she said, adding that temperatures will stay above freezing quite widely.

"The north of England and Scotland might see colder conditions around freezing in places like Carlisle and Edinburgh," she said.

Ms Maxey continued to say New Year's Day will also be mild and cloudy with a chance of short showers "here and there".

Winds could pick up on Wednesday night in the west with some possible gales blowing around coastal areas, she added.

"All in all we are looking at milder temperatures for the start of January," Ms Maxey said.
