New Year's Eve is ON: Mancunians react to announcement that no further restrictions will be brought in this week

Mancunians have reacted with mixed emotions after New Year's Eve celebrations were given the go-ahead this year.

The government announced this afternoon (December 27) that no further restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus in England will be brought in until at least 2022.

Hospitality bosses had been waiting nervously for news on whether they'd be able to open their venues on one of the busiest nights of the year.

And despite coronavirus hospital admissions reaching their highest level since March 5, bars, pubs and clubs will remain open - and no restrictions on social mixing will be implemented.

Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, said: "We look at the data on a daily basis, that hasn’t changed over the Christmas period, but there will be no further measures before the new year," he said.

"We won’t be taking any further measures, of course people should remain cautious as we approach new year celebrations and take a lateral flow test if that makes sense, celebrate outdoors if you can, have some ventilation indoors if you can.

"Please remain cautious and when we get into the new year of course we will see then if we do need to take any further measures but nothing more until then, at least."

The government announcement has been welcomed by Manchester's night time adviser, and Warehouse Project boss, Sacha Lord.

In an emotional post on Twitter, Mr Lord wrote: "This announcement is bigger than a New Years Eve party in England.

"For many, this will give hope. For many, this will help some struggling at the moment.

"A tough decision, put (sic) a defining one."

Manchester Councillor, Pat Karney, said he was pleased for local venues, but added he hoped the decision had been made based on 'credible medical information.'

"I am glad we have clarity because Manchester venues can now organise staff and stock," he said, speaking to the M.E.N.

"New Year's Eve is one of the biggest nights of the year for the hospitality industry so it's good news.

"We hope this good news is based on credible medical information because the government has a huge credibility problem at the moment."

Despite New Year's Eve being given the go-ahead, Manchester City Council already announced earlier this month that its annual firework display had been cancelled.

The decision has been taken due to current government guidance regarding the use of vaccine passports for large outdoor events which would prove 'extremely challenging' to manage due to the public nature of the event.

Around 20,000 people attended the last New Year's Eve fireworks display at Manchester Cathedral in 2019, in what was said to be a record-breaking event.

On Twitter, the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) said: “New Years is on!! Amazing News!!”

Michael Kill, CEO of NTIA, added: “Following an extremely anxious few weeks for our sector, we are pleased that the Prime Minister has listened to us, and announced today that no further restrictions will be implemented before New Year.”

Whilst today's announcement has been celebrated by many, some have reacted with concern.

When the Manchester Evening News asked readers if they'd be heading out on December 31, many responded saying they'd be staying at home.

Derek Robinson wrote: "I'm working but must admit I'm worried about the people I support going out and Covid being so rife."

Lee Kaye said: "Loads will be out because next year we'll all be under lockdown again."

Neil Watt wrote: "Just hope the NHS isn't overwhelmed new years eve."

Olwen Clapperton said: "Staying where I'm safest at home."

Other people said they are looking forward to being able to celebrate the new year - particularly those who may have missed Christmas due to having to isolate.

Steph Olding wrote: "So long as I test negative. My Christmas was ruined by Covid so hopefully I can enjoy new year instead.

Adam Cailler said: "Hurrah! No new COVID restrictions. Hey @GinoRestaurants Manchester, I'll be seeing you on New Year's Eve."

Karen Longden wrote: "Hell yes."

England is currently under the UK Government’s Plan B rulebook, with guidance to work from home, mask wearing in shops and other public settings, and Covid passes to gain entry to large events.

Curbs on hospitality and large events have been brought in for those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with the Scottish Government ordering nightclubs to be shuttered from Monday.
