New Year's Eve fireworks to return to Canberra

Canberra will bring in the new year with fireworks in a bid to "kickstart a return to major events in the capital", the territory government has confirmed.

Fireworks will be launched across multiple pontoons across central, east and west basins, with Canberrans invited to celebrate from the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

Early fireworks at 9pm will cater to families, while a midnight showing will close a year marked by outbreaks, lockdowns and restrictions.

The display will return for the first time since New Year's Eve 2018.

Musicians and performance artists will be stationed around the foreshore, while there will be opportunities for businesses to launch pop-up locations around the lake.

"It has been a difficult couple of years and Canberrans are ready to celebrate new beginnings," Assistant Minister for Economic Development Tara Cheyne said in statement.

"The New Year's Eve event this year aims to bring our community together for much deserved fun and excitement as say goodbye to 2021."

"This will also be an opportunity for us to support local artists, food vendors, tourism, and hospitality businesses after the extended lockdown in the ACT."

National Capital Authority Chief Executive, Sally Barnes said relocating fireworks to the shoreline of the lake would allow "all Canberrans the opportunity to bring in 2022 with an appropriate spectacle and celebration."

"With the easing of restrictions and our high vaccination rates, I hope this New Year's Eve event will kickstart a return to major events in the capital," said Minister Cheyne.

Events ACT will organise the event, working to meet ACT Health guidance.
