New Year's Eve 2019: 'Record breaking crowds' turn out to see in 2020 and the next decade with a party

Manchester has officially welcomed in the new year with a spectacular fireworks display outside the cathedral in the city centre.

The impressive display was watched by an estimated 20,000 people who gathered on Deansgate and Victoria bridge street.

This is the first year the new year celebration has taken place in this location, after town hall renovation works forced it - and several other city centre events - to move away from Albert Square.

A soundtrack of songs from Frozen 2 and the greatest showman as well as a cover of Coldplay’s Yellow, accompanied the pyrotechnics.

Families and groups of friends gathered from across the country and beyond, to join the party.

One family of six had driven all the way from Lincolnshire and were heading back the same evening.

Ahead of the ten second countdown councillor Pat Karney described the crowd as record breaking.

Speaking to the MEN earlier in the evening he said: “I was a bit worried about leaving Albert Square but it’s been a roaring success.

“The crowd is the biggest we’ve ever had at New Year, so thanks to everyone for coming down.

“There’s been loads of great things happening in the city this year, but we’ve had some bad things as well.

“The knifing at the Arndale, and there’s some horrible people in the world, but Manchester always takes the attitude that they’re not going to destroy our way of life.

“2020 is going to be another great year for Manchester, loads of celebrations and parades.”
