New Year Honours List: Knighthood for wealthy MP dubbed 'Tory Gandalf' who earns £468K

Top Tory Geoffrey Cox – one of Parliament’s biggest earners outside Westminster – is a Sir.

Once dubbed “Tory Gandalf” for his booming voice, the former Attorney General quit as a QC on joining the Cabinet in 2018.

He was sacked in Boris Johnson’s February reshuffle.

In September, he declared earnings of £468,000 per year plus VAT for 48 hours work a month as consultant global counsel for the law firm Withers.

Sir Geoffrey made headlines in 2015 after trying to claim
49p for milk before being knocked back by Parliament’s expenses watchdog.

He stood down as chair of the cross-party standards committee, after failing to declare more than £400,000 in outside earnings.

He was honoured for his work as a dedicated constituency MP, promoting farming, fishing and the environment, and for his legal career.

Tory aide Richard Jackson, who worked in No10 under Theresa May, was handed an OBE.

Labour MP Angela Eagle, a longstanding equality campaigner, is made a Dame for political service.

Former Labour MP Tom Clarke, who served in Parliament between 1982 and 2015, is also knighted.

Richard Corbett, the leader of the European Parliamentary Labour Party until Brexit, is given a CBE.
