New Wigan Warriors signing an injury doubt for Super League opener

New Wigan Warriors signing Jai Field is an injury doubt for the opening game of the season.

The speedster has suffered a back strain and has been ruled out of this weekend's pre-season friendly with Salford Red Devils and will be unavailable for at least a fortnight, with head coach Adrian Lam admitting he could miss the opening round contest with Leigh Centurions.

Field, who has joined the club from NRL side Parramatta Eels, will be joined on the sidelines for the club's only pre-season friendly by Oliver Gildart, who is nursing a leg injury.

But that hasn't dampened Lam's spirits ahead of the contest, which will be the club's first game in over three months.

Lam has been thrilled with his players' performances in the pre-season.

"The boys have been training great, I'm really happy at the moment and also as a team, a lot of the young ones here have grown both physically and with maturity.

"It's fantastic, the buzz around the place is real special. The boys have been getting on great with each other. More importantly, the way I want to play as a coach, I think they've picked it up now and this year was about having a pre-season in which players physically get that more power and strength.

"I think we're in a really good place, everyone is excited this week as we have a friendly with Salford on Friday then a week off and round one with Leigh which should be one hell of a battle."
