New Wetherspoons at Glasgow Central Station moves step closer to opening

Wetherspoons has moved a step closer to opening a new city centre pub after licensing chiefs granted its application.

The pub chain had applied for a variation to the premises licence, which allows the sale of alcohol, on the site of the old Central Bar in Central Station .

This includes altering the opening hours and capacity, with the new bar able to hold 226 people.

Glasgow City Council’s Licensing Board approved the bid when it met on Friday.

Archie MacIver, representing Wetherspoons, told the committee a future bid to extend the capacity further may be submitted.

The pub will be located on the first floor of the station, near the Hope Street exit.

Planning approval was granted by the city council in July last year.

“We have enjoyed great success in Glasgow and are keen to open one of our pubs at Glasgow Central,” Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon said at the time.

“We believe it would be welcomed by travellers and be an asset to the station itself.”

Plans for an outdoor area have been withdrawn, Mr MacIver told the Licensing Board.

Wetherspoons currently run five Glasgow city centre pubs, including The Counting House, The Society Room, and The Crystal Palace.
