As a result, last week 2353 new Covid-19 cases were announced in the region – the first time more than 2000 cases have been recorded in a single week since October.

Case numbers had fallen as low as 589 in the week beginning December 21 but following the limited festive easing of restrictions, weekly case numbers have increased by nearly 300 per cent.

Case numbers in Lanarkshire peaked in week beginning October 17 when 2719 new positive tests were recorded.
