New walk-through Covid test centres open in Bristol

Two new walk-through test centres have opened in Bristol for people with symptoms of coronavirus.

A facility at 100 Temple Street in Redcliffe opened on Monday (February 22) and new appointments will become available daily.

Another new test site opened on Tuesday (February 23) at BAWA Healthcare and Leisure in Filton, and is easily accessible without a car.

The self-administered tests must be booked online through the NHS website and only people with a high temperature, new continuous cough, loss or change to their smell or taste, should make an appointment.

People should not travel to the site by taxi or public transport, and they must adhere to social distancing, practice good hygiene and wear face-coverings at the centre, and on their way to and from the site.

Anyone attending an appointment will be provided with guidance on getting to and from the test site safely, with additional support for vulnerable groups and people with disabilities.

There are now more than 800 Covid test centres across the UK and more than half of them are walk-through sites.

Health Minister, Lord Bethell, said: “To respond to the coronavirus, we have built a major testing and tracing system from scratch. We are constantly working to expand and improve it with new technologies and innovations so everyone with symptoms can get a test.

“New walk-in sites like this one makes it even easier to get a test no matter where you live. If you have symptoms of coronavirus, I urge you to book a test today and follow the advice of NHS Test and Trace if you are contacted to protect others and stop the spread of the virus.”

G4S will help run the centre and Alex Lever, managing director of their testing site programme, said: "The Bristol walk-through site will play a key role in supporting the national response to the pandemic and we are extraordinarily proud of our dedicated employees at Covid-19 testing sites across the UK.

"Their enthusiasm has been inspiring as they continue to support the Government, our health services and the public in this crisis."
