New wakeboarding centre set to open in Edinburgh at former Granton Quarry

A new wakeboarding centre is set to open in the north of Edinburgh at the site of a former quarry in Granton.

A report going before councillors recommends leasing Granton Quarry to a company called Edinburgh Wake ltd.

The local authority has been in discussions about transforming the site into a wakeboarding park.

Wakeboarding is a watersport where the rider stands on a board and is towed behind a motorboat, skimming across the surface and performing tricks.

The new centre is part of the Granton Waterfront redevelopment, which aims to regenerate the area by the shore.

Proposals for a new marina in Granton recently got the green light from the council's planning committee.

The report on Granton Quarry recommends a 15-year lease to Edinburgh Wake ltd.

It says: "The quarry is currently unused and the council are responsible for site security and maintenance costs. Given the nature of the site, potential uses are minimal.

"Edinburgh Wake Limited approached the council to take a lease of the quarry to establish a wakeboarding centre.

"In order to ensure that best vale was obtained from any proposal, the quarry was marketed as a potential leisure opportunity and a closing date set.

"The proposal from Edinburgh Wake was the only bid received. 3.6 This proposal aligns well with the emerging development framework with progress on marketing the quarry for leisure use."

Edinburgh Wake's park is understood to be separate from a planned surfing centre on an artificial lake to the west of Edinburgh.

The disused Craigpark Quarry near Ratho will be transformed into a cove with generated waves.
