Jordan has witnessed a 9 percent spike in positive coronavirus test results amid a rise in fatalities related to the disease.

People are bracing for new restrictions to curb infections as authorities announced that the kingdom is grappling with a third virus wave.

The Health Ministry confirmed 14 virus-related deaths on Monday, raising the toll to 11,361. It reported 3,579 new infections, taking the total to 914,849.

A health official warned that the kingdom is grappling with the third wave of the virus, saying it confirmed 20,000 new cases last week alone.

Average weekly deaths from the disease has risen from 70 to 90.

Meanwhile, debate is raging over the vaccination of school children after infections were reported among them.

Authorities may be forced to order that schools resume remote teaching.

The vaccination rate in the kingdom is low. Only 3.5 million people have received two shots of the vaccine. Less than 50 percent of the population has received the first shot in spite of official calls for people to receive the jab.
