A total of 1,606 new cases of coronavirus infections were confirmed Friday in Tokyo and 39 prefectures, including in airport quarantines. This surpasses the 1,579 cases reported on July 31 and sets a new record high for the number of new cases per day.
Seven deaths were reported in several areas on the same day including in Kanagawa and Osaka prefectures.
The number of new cases per day also marked the highest in Osaka Prefecture with 255 people; Okinawa Prefecture with 100; Shiga Prefecture with 31; and Akita Prefecture where 14 people were confirmed to be infected in its first case of a cluster.
According to the Okinawa prefectural government, the number of people infected per 100,000 people in the prefecture in the past week stood at 31.57 as of Thursday, exceeding Tokyo's 17.29 and marking the highest in the nation on the seventh consecutive day.
