New virtual tour of Edinburgh Castle has hidden tunnels you can explore from home

People from all over the world can now take a trip through the hidden tunnels of Edinburgh Castle in a new virtual 3-D tour.

Launched by Historic Environment Scotland (HES), the "immersive digital tour" gives online visitors in-depth access to the whole castle from their fingertips.

HES say the wanted to offer people the chance to "appreciate the scale and magnificence of Edinburgh Castle" from the comfort of their home.

The impressive 3D model was led by HES's Innovation and Digital Documentation Teams based at the Engine Shed in Stirling who set out to replicate "Scotland’s iconic fortress" to allow anyone to access it.

Speaking about the new model, a HES spokesperson said: "These digital innovations are crucial in helping to understand, conserve and tell the stories of our historic sites.

The virtual castle was created using the latest laser scan data technology and it is hoped that they can digitally document another 300 heritage sites.
