New virtual tour lets people explore Scots chapel which starred in The Da Vinci Code

A Scottish chapel that has become hugely popular with tourists after it featured in hit film the Da Vinci Code is offering fans an entirely new way to explore the famous historic site.

The new version of Rosslyn Chapel’s interactive app has been launched, with the hope that it will inspire more people to visit the landmark now that it has re-opened to visitors..

The app offers an immersive virtual experience and a 360° degree panoramic tour for inquisitive guests to explore.

There's also a newly designed photo gallery showing some of the most striking features of the chapel, such as the Apprentice Pillar, The Mason’s Pillar and the Green Men.

Rosslyn Chapel is found in the village of Roslin in Midlothian (Jane Barlow/PA)

Developed by Scottish company Grizzle & Tan in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland using state-of-the-art 3D models and digital visualisation technology, the new tech is available to download for free on both IOS and Android.

Director of Rosslyn Chapel, Trust Ian Gardner, said: ‘This new version of our app is a wonderful example of how cutting-edge technology can be used to interpret our medieval building and provide virtual access to the chapel from all over the world.

"We hope that many people will enjoy using it and will then be inspired to come and see the real thing, now that the Chapel is open again to visitors.’

Digital documentation manager at Historic Environment Scotland, Dr Lyn Wilson, added: ‘We are delighted to be releasing a major re-imagining of this innovative, interactive app in collaboration with our long-standing partners at Rosslyn Chapel Trust.

"The app uses highly accurate 3D data, 360° panoramic imagery and gaming technologies to support virtual access, learning and exploration of this unique and special place in a beautifully re-designed and engaging interface.’
