New VAR feature to be introduced for Man City vs Brighton FA Cup semi-final

Replays of incidents that come under VAR scrutiny will be shown to fans inside the stadium for the first time in England during Man City's FA Cup semi-final against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

The FA will extend the present VAR trial that has been running at Premier League grounds since the FA Cup third round at the two semis at Wembley, allowing fans to see the replays that the Video Assistant Referee will see on the big screens at the stadium.

However, a 'definitive video clip' will only be shown once a decision is made.

The decision comes after complaints that VAR can be unclear and confusing for fans inside the stadium, who are often left in the dark while a decision is made and what for.

"The FA Cup has been at the forefront VAR testing process in England and this is the next step in its development," said Andy Ambler, the FA's director of professional game relations.

Clubs in England are currently banned from showing replays of controversial incidents in case it causes unrest between fans or players.

There is precedent for this. In the 2010 World Cup former Blue Carlos Tevez scored a clear off-side goal (he was behind the goalkeeper) for Argentina against Mexico in the last-16.

The Mexicans were already protesting but then when a replay of the goal was shown on the big screen they became incensed and surrounded the referee - who had no choice but to give the goal - and nearly sparked a riot.

VAR trials so far this season in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup have all chosen not to show replays to fans, however, they were shown in stadiums during the World Cup in Russia.

Yet, Man City and Brighton will be the first on Saturday and will be followed by the second semi-final between Watford and Wolves the following day.
