New US embassy at Jurys Hotel as rezoning application submitted to DCC

The US embassy has submitted an application to Dublin City Council to build a new embassy on the sight of the Jury's Hotel in Ballsbridge.

Embassy officials will need DCC to rezone the land from the current residential zoning to enterprise and employment use.

The rezoning application was submitted to the council on behalf of the US State Department who want to upgrade from their current embassy which has been in commission since the 1960s.

The Ballsbridge embassy is believed not to measure up to updated security guidelines issued by the State Department.

Jurys Hotel, as well as Berkeley Court, were sold to developer Sean Dunne for a whopping €240 million in 2005.

The current United States embassy has a workforce of between 150-200 with that set to double if the redevelopment plans for Jurys Hotel are given the go-ahead by DCC.

The US will retain the current Ballsbridge embassy for at least the next 10 years so as to allow for the redevelopment of Jurys Hotel, just minutes down the road.

DCC councillors have written to the US embassy to enquire about the future preservation of the iconic embassy building.
