New uniform designs for members of the Tokyo Skytree staff have been announced for the first time since 2012. The uniforms are scheduled to debut during the season changeover in October.
The staff of the landmark in Sumida Ward, Tokyo will don uniforms with new designs that emphasize Japan's traditional beauty through the use colors such as sakura pink and bright emerald green along with a hemp leaf pattern that has been used throughout the nation since ancient times on clothing for children and infants, imbuing them with their hopes for the Skytree's further development.
Tobu Tower Skytree Co., the tower's managing company, petitioned the Bunka Fashion College in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo for a design. Out of 12 groups of 18 students, the design of fourth-year student Megumi Higashiyama was chosen.
"I consciously worked to combine the beauty of Japan and the innovation of the Skytree," she said. "I think foreign visitors will enjoy them as well."
The uniforms were originally planned to debut in concurrence with the summer Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, due to their postponement, the debut of the new uniform design was also pushed back to this fall. The new uniform will not only be worn by the observatory guides, ticket counter staff and sales outlet shop clerks, the Tokyo Skytree's mascot character Sorakara-chan will also model the new ensemble as she greets visitors.
"As we diligently work to implement coronavirus infection prevention measures, we'd like to welcome many visitors in our new uniforms, said Yutaka Iwase, the president of Tobu Skytree Co.
