New U of M coach Juwan Howard comments on rivalry with MSU, Tom Izzo

Michigan shocked the Big Ten and all of NCAA Men’s Basketball last week when they announced that they would be hiring Miami Heat assistant coach and former ‘Fab Five’ member Juwan Howard as their new head coach.

Howard is replacing John Beilein, who is, in my opinion, the best men’s basketball coach in Michigan history. Beilein brought Michigan to two Final Four appearance to go along with two Big Ten Tournament Championships. He was also the 2014 Big Ten Coach of the Year to boot.

More importantly to Spartans fans, Howard is taking over as the new archfoe and nemesis to Michigan State’ Tom Izzo. The rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State was the best it has ever been during Beilein’s administration, as it was one of the few times both programs had sustained success.

Thus, it was only natural that new Coach Howard was asked about the rivalry and the Spartans legendary coach.

We knew that Izzo is all class and maintained a good relationship with Beilein, so it is not surprising at all that he sent a text to Howard. While they will be competing for some local prospects, in general, it is better for basketball in the state of Michigan when both teams are good and exciting.

Mr. Howard, get ready for battle, the #1 ranked Michigan State Spartans will be coming for you this fall.
