New Troon signing Ben Black reveals why he swapped Largs Thistle for Portland Park

New Troon signing Ben Black says the attacking philosophy of manager Jimmy Kirkwood attracted him to the club.

The 23-year-old winger joined the Portland Parkers last week after bringing the curtain down on a three-year spell at Largs Thistle.

And he admits it took just a couple of training sessions with the Seasiders to convince him his future lay there.

He said: "I loved my time at Largs but I just had this feeling I needed a new challenge.

"I went in and trained with Troon and enjoyed it. I felt I could add to the squad so my mind was made up after a couple sessions.

"The manager made it clear to me he likes playing with wingers and attacking football so for me that’s perfect.

"I like to try to be direct and positive when I get the ball so I hope to bring goalscoring opportunities for myself and the other attackers for the Troon fans to enjoy.

"I think we can do really well. The squad is looking strong in all areas and Troon were doing really well last season up until it was stopped."

Black is also looking forward to being reunited with defender and fellow new signing Darren Miller who he played alongside at Irvine Meadow after making the step up to the Juniors from youth football.

He added: "Having players like him in the squad helped me learn how to adapt to playing Junior football.

"I know he’ll be great for the other young boys we have in the squad at Troon too.

"Darren’s played at this level for a long time and will bring much-needed experience."

Black admits he'll look back at his time at Largs with nothing but fondness.

He went on: "The obvious highlight was the run to the Scottish Junior Cup final.

"It was a brilliant season and brilliant team. It's just a shame we couldn't go on to win the final."
